Qi deviations, is many
times a question in my
clinic , as I use this term a lot. But what are Qi
deviations? Well from a Chinese Health Practitioner perspective,
Qi deviations are anything that transmutes a person into blood
stasis - the word the Chinese doctor uses for dis-ease (mental
or physical). Another way of stating this is – Are you
fulfilling your life’s destiny?
Remember the spirit or Shen and the Qi are carried by blood, so
anything that impacts the Shen or the Qi alters the blood, (i.e.
emotions, trauma, life altering event) – these all can cause
blood stasis or Qi deviations.
The Shen or the spirit is somewhat of a mystery, even to Chinese
Health Professionals. So with great humility, I will do my best
to explain Shen. Claude Larre, a great sinologist, speaks of it
this way, “We know that the Shen are the messengers of
Heaven……Heaven is not in myself without some kind of
intermediary and the intermediary between Heaven and earth is
the Shen.”
Shen is the light of the multiverse and the infinite cosmic
light beyond the scope of the human mind. It refers to all five
WuJiingShen, or five spirits, that enter the body upon
conception (i.e. the Hun Ling, the Po Ling, the Shen Ling, and
in five element theory: the Zhi and the Yi). Some also attribute
the Shen to consciousness of enlightened awareness or love. The
Shen manifest itself in the eyes (the light of God within). From
a Chinese Health Practitioner perspective, we look at the eyes
as a profound diagnostic tool, telling a complete story about
that person and where they are in life.
Qi is your ability to connect with things….all things tangible
and intangible, such as Shen or the cool sensation of a mountain
pond. Its original meaning was “The shape of rising clouds” or
cloud Qi. Like clouds themselves, Qi can be seen, sensed and
experienced, but is ethereal to the touch and cannot be grasped.
In the Great Book of Chinese Characters (Han Yu Da Zi Dian), Qi
has three additional meanings: 1) to give 2) to beg 3) to take
or to save. In Taoist understanding, the soul begs to be
embodied again, to give life and to take on human form to
perform its’ life work. All souls are exceptional and have a
unique purpose, but can get sidetracked - deviated – from their
original “factory settings.”
Many of my teachers have discussed the complexity of how the
mind can “imprint forever” the effects of trauma, altered
thought and “the relationship one has with themselves” into the
blood. This is in a form of a hologram, a three dimensional
picture with sound that can play back better than any home
entertainment system ever developed. When the soul first is
embodied into human form (the fetus) it has a clearly defined
destiny and is unstained from transmutation or perversion. Just
as we acquire possessions and “stuff” that we no longer use in
the attic, basement and closets, so too we acquire stuff in our
blood. Clutter clearing always feels good in the tangible sense
and more so in the intangible emotional baggage we carry around
in the blood.
From a Chinese Health Practitioner perspective, once these
imprints are made on the blood, they are there forever, unless
one uses specialized techniques to purge out the pathogenic
quality of that repeated thought or trauma. The conscious memory
of the event stills remains, just the toxic effects are
disassembled and removed.
If there were no repercussions of this collected baggage, then
at the end of days there just would be an estate sale with all
the items collected. But life is never that simple. The
collection of intangible emotional/spiritual items in the blood
is similar to the tangible material things we own. The more you
own, the more maintenance is required to keep things just
operational. So all that emotional/spiritual baggage you own not
only needs maintenance, but prevents you from doing other things
in your life, as we frequently mutter to ourselves, “There is
only so many hours in a day.”
So is your emotional/spiritual baggage preventing you from
perusing your life’s purpose? Do you have Qi deviations
preventing you from your true destiny?
To find out, ask yourself the following questions:
1) Does you feel centered and balanced in your day, your week
etc.? (It can be enormously busy…That is not what I am asking)
2) Do you feel in control….. or is fate controlling you?
Fate defined: is the events unfolding beyond a persons control,
regarded and determined by a supernatural power
3) Do you truly understand yourself?
These questions challenge your consciousness of your life. How
aware are you or are you just making it through the day? Do you
feel as though there is more to life that you are not achieving
and more importantly - participating in?
In Taoism, we never tell or command anyone to do anything. We
gently ask and probe a person’s consciousness – asking the right
questions at the right time – so that a person “discovers” their
own answers, their own Inner Strength. We also stir that which
is in the unciousness to become known. In Taoism, we believe
that all answers come from within on all three fields of
existence: The physical (health), the emotional/mind and the
spiritual divine being within. We then teach how to integrate
these “fields of energy” into a daily practice – a form of
preventative medicine if you will.
